Auschwitz was the largest concentration camp and most notorious death camp. It used to be used as a detention center. It was created in 1940.
Every prisoner received a camp number when they entered the camp. They were right next to a railroad so they could travel throughout Europe to their deaths. 1 million Jews were killed here.
Jews received little food and were very exhausted from hard labor. Jews who couldn't work anymore, went back to Birkenau on a train and gassed. The Murder System the Nazis used was kept secret from the Jews.
